In 2020, Outside is tracking every cyclist who was killed by a driver. As the end of the year nears, the death toll is at 675—despite less car traffic due to the pandemic. But the victims are more than just statistics. They were mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, husbands, wives, coworkers. They were riding for fitness, for fun, for transportation. They were loved, and they are missed. Here we remember nine of their stories, in the spirit of honoring them all.

It’s hard to say which of the details of my great-grand mother’s story are true. I’ve always imagined a small fire in her that just wouldn’t go out. This is because when my great-grandmother was 5 years old, her adopted parents hanged her. My great grandmother was Mohawk. She was my mother’s father’s mother and she was adopted by a white, Christian family who took in several Native children. When the couple fell on hard times, they couldn’t provide for so many mouths. The solution was to get rid of the mouths.

When I saw the elite versions of sports, it was very clear that Black and Brown people didn’t have access. When you don’t see anyone who looks like you, it’s very hard to think that it’s possible for you. For many cyclists, there are few things better than long and winding roads, minimal car traffic at low speed limits, and incredible views of nature. And at many U.S. national parks, this is just the case.

On March 13th, Ty Brookhart left his home in Gold Hill, Colorado, to travel to Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, for the wedding of his two good friends. Todos Santos has a reputation for catering to surfers, mountain bikers, and artists of all kinds. It was supposed to be a long weekend away from the fresh snow that had fallen in the Rocky Mountains, to relax in the sand and celebrate friends. But with another round of snow headed to the mountains of Colorado, and COVID-19 forcing more and more travel restrictions, it was easier for Ty to fly his three-year-old son, Wilder, and his son’s mother, Rachel, to Baja, rather than getting back to Colorado himself. The respite lasted nearly three months.

Around Colorado, and throughout the country, COVID19 recommendations and mandates are changing almost daily. Leaders are encouraging fresh air and physical activity, but also restricting travel. Whatever you think of when you think of long-haul trucking, it’s not Kasper Kavalaris.
Kavalaris grew up in the Midwest and earned an Associate Degree in Illustration from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He went on to study classical painting and drawing under a master in Florence, Italy for three years.
As a freelance illustrator, Kavalaris worked with several prestigious clients, but ultimately couldn’t make enough money to survive. Back in the states, he knew he wanted to pursue filmmaking, but also needed to make some money. He looked up the highest paying entry-level jobs, and despite knowing nothing about the work, decided to give trucking a go because it sounded like an adventure.
