Project Life in the Map
When I moved to Salida, Colorado at the beginning of November, I started thinking about goals for 2021. Backyard access to big mountains means getting up high as often as possible, for sure. But I wanted something more organized to work toward — I wanted a list.
While I was in the local bike shop, I asked for recommendations for great gravel rides. One of the mechanics sort of nonchalantly suggested I check out Droney Gulch — a 25-mile loop from Salida with great views of Mt. Shavano. He pointed it out on a map hanging on the wall. So I picked up a copy of the map. A Latitude 40 Recreation Topo. On one side, it has 62 trail recommendations, and on the other, the ten local 14ers. Honestly, the Droney Gulch loop was one of the best rides of my life. The project was hatched.
Over the course of the year (2021), my goal is to ride / hike / run all 62 trail recommendations, and the local 14ers. It’ll be a lot — some of the trails are extensive all-day and multi-day adventures. But some of them are much less intense. It will be a balance of gravel biking, mountain biking, trail running, and hiking. It will be life in the map.
I’m working on this project thanks in part to excellent brands that I believe in, and that are graciously supporting me. Brands that are not just making great nutrition, gear, and clothing, but also doing good for the planet. Velocio Apparel, Topo Designs, Bobo’s, GU Energy, NUUN Hydration, ORUCASE, and Sturdy Bag Designs.
I’ll also be gear testing various items for Backpacker Magazine.
